Daily Itinerary

Day 1 Frontier Entry: Thai Border – Houay Xai – Luang Namtha (L)

Cross the Mekong into the untamed northern frontier of Laos. After meeting your guide at the border post in Houay Xai, break into the rural backcountry toward Luang Namtha. En route, make landfall at an isolated Lanten village—a resilient ethnic group known for their dark indigo hand-dyed garments, Daoist spirit worship, and rare ancient Chinese script. Settle into a rustic guesthouse not far from the bustling night market, resting up for the grueling trails ahead.

Day 2 Under the Green Canopy: Nam Ha Protected Area (B, L, D)

Get up bright and early to get your supplies from the morning market before you leave civilization behind as you plunge into the Nam Ha National Protected Area—a dense wilderness of towering ancient trees, twisting root networks, and hidden wildlife. Tailored to test your endurance, your guide will map out a rugged route traversing sharp ridge lines and muddy river crossings (or shooting rapids by kayak). As night falls, bunker down in a remote ethnic minority village, sharing a fire-cooked meal and authentic cultural exchange with your hosts.

Day 3 Deep Jungle Exploration: Nam Ha Protected Area (B, L, D)

Wake to the raw calls of the jungle. Press deeper into off-the-beaten-path territory where few travelers tread. Navigate native hunting trails, learn wilderness survival skills from local guides, and push your physical limits over unforgiving, emerald-draped terrain.

Day 4 Ridge Traversals & Frontier Outposts: Nam Ha to Luang Namtha (B, L)

Conquer your final stretch of jungle wilderness, navigating steep descents and crossing rushing mountain streams before emerging back into Luang Namtha. After days off-grid, enjoy a clean bed, an ice-cold Beerlao, and a well-earned feast, resting your feet for the river legs of the expedition.

Note on Days 2–4: Your 3-day excursion through the Nam Ha National Protected Area is completely customizable. Depending on your appetite for adrenaline, this multi-day stretch can be tackled as a pure deep-jungle wilderness trek or transformed into a dynamic multi-sport mix of trekking and kayaking through exhilarating white-water rapids along the river sections. Routes are tailored directly to your fitness and travel style.

Day 5 Over the Mountains: Luang Namtha – Muang Khoua (B, L)

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before leaving Luang Namtha. Chart an overland course eastward through the rugged, cloud-shrouded peaks near the Chinese border to Muang Khoua—a remote frontier outpost clinging to the banks of the Nam Ou River.

Day 6 Wild Waterways: Down the Nam Ou to Muang Ngoy (B)

Board a narrow wooden longboat to navigate the pristine Nam Ou River. Cut through dramatic limestone canyons and roaring jungle gorges on a fast-flowing waterway accessible only by rivercraft. Drop anchor at isolated, roadless river villages to witness ancient ways of life before pulling into the quaint cliffside hamlet of Muang Ngoy.

Day 7 Riverside Recharge & Karst Sunset: Muang Ngoy (B)

After days of pushing your limits in the wild, enjoy a welcome change of pace in isolated Muang Ngoy. Still only accessible by river (and 4×4 trails in the dry season), this peaceful hamlet offers your first taste of comfort food, cozy local coffee spots, and relaxed riverside eateries.

Take the day off and spend it however you like. Our tip: Spend the morning taking a leisurely stroll down the picturesque valley path toward Ban Na village, walking past lush, sprawling rice paddies and stopping to explore the subterranean chambers of Tham Kang Cave. In the late afternoon, scale the trail up to Phanoi Viewpoint just in time to watch the sun drop behind the jagged mountains on the far side of the Nam Ou River.

Optional Add-On: For those who refuse to slow down, break away for a 2-day high-altitude trek and hill-tribe homestay.

Day 8 Jungle Stream Scramble: Muang Ngoy to Nong Khiaw (B, L)

Disembark at Ban Hat Sao village and immediately hit the backcountry trail. Scramble directly through rushing streams and mossy natural cascades, passing emerald rice paddies on your way to the hidden Tad Mok waterfall. After taking a cooling plunge, follow the river trails downstream until the dramatic karst towers of Nong Khiaw rise on the horizon.

Day 9 The Cascade Challenge: 100 Waterfalls Trek (B, L)

Journey by longboat downriver before embarking on one of Laos’ premier trekking experiences: the 100 Waterfalls. Equipped with water shoes, spend the day wading, scrambling, and climbing up a continuous series of waterfalls churning through a hidden canyon. After reaching the top and visiting a river village, return to Nong Khiaw by longboat as twilight washes over the cliffs.

Day 10 Artisans of the Valley: Nong Khiaw to Luang Prabang (B)

Follow the winding river road south toward civilization. Pause at Ban Na Nyang, a traditional cotton-weaving village where local families operate wooden handlooms beneath their stilt houses. Conclude your northern expedition as you enter the UNESCO World Heritage city of Luang Prabang for your hotel transfer.
