Daily Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Luang Prabang (D)

Arrive in Luang Prabang, where mountain air meets colonial architecture and golden stupas. After hotel check-in, set off for an initial orientation stroll through town. Depending on arrival timing, climb the steps of Mount Phousi for a panoramic view of the Mekong peninsula, or wander through the night market as craft vendors illuminate the central street.

Overnight in Luang Prabang

Day 2 Luang Prabang by Bike – Temples & Living Traditions (B/L)

Hop on two wheels after breakfast to explore the heritage city alongside your guide. Ride through the bustling morning market, where local growers bring wild jungle greens and freshwater fish, then visit the National Museum, Wat Mai, and the glistening mosaic walls of Wat Xieng Thong. After sampling local dishes at a recommended eatery, spend the afternoon exploring 16th-century Wat Visoun and the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Center (TAEC) to learn about the region’s diverse hill tribes. End the day watching the sunset from Mount Phousi before diving into the night market’s handmade textiles.

Day 3 The Mock Mhoo Trail – Into the Protected Canopy (B/L/D)

A short 15-minute transfer brings us to the base of Tad Thong waterfall, where we step onto a true jungle lifeline—a well-worn mountain path used daily by villagers carrying produce down to town. We follow the stream upward to its source at Ban Houay Thong, a unique plateau community where Hmong and Khmu families live side-by-side. From here, traverse toward Mock Mhoo, a “ghost village” abandoned four decades ago, where the land quietly holds the stories of those who once called it home.
After lunch, enter a long-forgotten trail cutting through dense, protected rainforest across a rugged mountain range. Emerging from the thick canopy to hard-earned, sweeping valley views, we descend toward our remote farmstay. Unwind with a home-cooked Khmu dinner as the sun dips behind the peaks.

Trekking Details: 10 km (6.5 mi), medium to difficult trekking, 5–8 hours depending on conditions. An easier alternative via the Houy Nok Phit Trail is available.

Overnight in Ban Houy Thao Farmstay

Accommodation: Simple remote farmstay (thin mattresses under mosquito nets, solar lighting, western-style toilet, bucket shower; no phone charging).

Day 4 Kayaking the Nam Khan – Village Trails & Turquoise Waters (B/L)

Wake to mountain bird call and a hearty breakfast before starting our morning descent to Ban Houy Thao, connecting with the community and gaining rare insight into daily Khmu traditions. From the village, follow the trail down to the riverbank and swap your boots for paddles. Boarding our kayaks, we let the gentle current guide us down the Nam Khan River, drifting past emerald jungle cliffs and stopping on a quiet pebbled shore for a riverside picnic. Between July and February, we pull ashore at Tad Sae Waterfall, where turquoise tiered pools invite a refreshing swim. Paddle the final stretch to Ban Xieng Lom, where our driver waits to shuttle us back to Luang Prabang.

Activity Details: 5 km (3 mi) easy trekking (~1.5 hours) + 13 km (8 mi) kayaking (~3–4 hours).

Overnight in Luang Prabang

Day 5 North to Nong Khiaw – Limestone Karsts & War History (B)

Leave the city behind as we travel north into the rugged interior aboard local transport, winding through dramatic mountain passes and sparsely populated river valleys. Arrive in Nong Khiaw, a striking outpost encircled by vertical limestone karsts. In the afternoon, venture into historical limestone caves that served as vital shelters and military headquarters during the Indochina War, offering a poignant look into the area’s recent history. Spend a peaceful evening along the Nam Ou River, watching the sunset cast long shadows over the karst towers.

Overnight in Nong Khiaw

Day 6 FairTrek & Homestay – Life Among the Emerald Karsts (B/L/D)

Set out on a 2- to 3-hour FairTrek hike into the extraordinary valley surrounding Ban Na Luang. As part of Tiger Trail’s FairTrek initiative, your visit directly supports community development funds and local host families. In Ban Na Luang, experience the warm hospitality and distinct customs of the Lao Loum and Lao Soung ethnic groups. Surrounded by emerald rice fields and dramatic rock formations, spend the evening cooking, sharing stories, and staying overnight in a traditional community home.

Trekking Details: 2–3 hours, easy to moderate.

Overnight in Ban Na Luang Homestay

Day 7 Nam Ou Cruise & Return to Luang Prabang (B/L)

Take a quiet morning walk along a local footpath to a neighboring village before boarding a traditional longtail boat along the Nam Ou River. Drift past dramatic cliff faces and riverbank hamlets back to Nong Khiaw, then board our transfer back to Luang Prabang, arriving by late afternoon. Enjoy a relaxed evening back in town at your own pace.
